Nilackal Church

Nilackal church is located at a distance of 5 km away from Plappally, in Pathanamthitta district.  Nilackal church is one among the seven and a half churches established by St. Thomas, the Apostle of India. The seven-and-a-half churches are known as “ezhara pallikal” in Malayalam. Nilackal church was constructed in A.D 54 near the forest of Nilackal within the Sabarimala hills. It is the only church inside the forest, whereas the rest six and a half churches are in coastal areas. 

Nilackal is entirely a forest area, which is a common mountain route of trade between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is into these terrains St. Thomas came and preached God’s words and baptized around 1100 people. Today the place is famous for St. Thomas Church, Ecumenical Centre Trust, and the cross established by the Apostle. 

The church, the trust, and the cross remain as the strength and power of Christian churches including their unity and harmony. The churches and temples near this area rest in peace with each other.
