Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple

It is one of the oldest temples in Kerala, with its establishment dating back to the time when Lord Parashuram retained the whole state out of the sea. Situated at Peruvanam, Thrissur, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thus, it remains one of the most visited pilgrimages among the Shaivites. Residing in 7 acres of land, the temple is a natural splendour protected by the Archeological Survey of India since 1982.

The temple is specific for its two different shrines, “Irattayappan temple” in the northern side and “Maadathilappan temple” towards the southern side. There are two shiva lingas present inside the Irattiyappan temple, thus even the name represents duality. In association with the legend behind Maadathilappan temple, it is believed that once a shivalinga was being transported after getting it in a river near Badrinath, it got stuck on the branch of a tree. It didn’t move further from the spot upon several trials, thus a temple was built in that exact place known as Maadathilappan temple. The sanctum of this temple is said to be the tallest in South India.

Peruvanam Pooram is the major festival of the temple that is celebrated with much grandeur and splendour, many devotees regardless of their religion and caste get together with the celebrations. If you are near Thrissur, a visit to this temple would be a pleasing experience as the beauty and spiritual ambience would leave you awe-struck. The excellence and marvel of the temple can never be explained in words.
