Shankara Samadhi in Thrissur is the resting place of the famous Indian scholar Adi Shankaracharya, the philosopher who proposed Advaita Vedanta. It is believed that he attained his salvation at the age of 32 in Thrissur A.D 820. The sage was born in Kalady, and the birthplace of Adi Shankara is a famous pilgrim centre in Ernakulam district. He is also associated with Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, as his parents are believed to have prayed to Lord Shiva for a child and the deity blessed them with this scholar child.
Adi Shankara at the age of 16, has studied all the Vedas and was all set for his future studies. He travelled a lot and became a sage attainting all kinds of wisdom. His journey went far and beyond upon teaching his school of thoughts. At last, he returned to his native land and attained salvation here. Very close to the samadhi of Sankara a temple was built with a captivating image of the Guru, for the sake of his thousands of followers.
