Attukal Bhagavathi Temple

Attukal Bhagavathi Temple is a world-famous temple with a Guinness Book Record for “the largest gathering of women in the world”. An average of about 1.5 million women gather around to celebrate the famous Pongal festival on Karthika day of Kumbham month, which comes around February or March. Pongal rituals can only be performed by women, and on the prosperous day of celebration, the streets of the city are filled with women devotees of “Aatukalamma”. The women offer pongala, which is rice cooked with jaggery, ghee, coconut, and other ingredients, to attain the blessings of the Goddess.

Attukal Devi or Attukal Bhagavathi is said to be the incarnation of Goddess Parvathi, who is portrayed with four arms bearing a spear, a sword, a skull, and a shield. Apart from Attukaldevi, the sculptures of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Kal,i and Lord Shiva are also worshipped in the temple. The temple is filled with many sculptures taken from the history of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
