Palayam Church

St. Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral Church, popularly known as Palayam church, is located in Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram. It is the cathedral church of Trivandrum Archdiocese. The church is 125 years old with catholic followers visiting the religious centre throughout the year. The church is one of the biggest landmarks in the city, built in the style of gothic architecture with an astounding bell tower.

Palayam church has three bells brought from Belgium. The bells are named after St. Joseph, the patron of the church, St. Francis Xavier, the apostle of India and Bishop Aloysius Benziger, the pioneer missionary bishop of Quilon. The church currently white in colour was painted red for a long period of time till it was renovated in 2010.

The church has a massive statue of St. Joseph holding the child Jesus, right in the facade of the cathedral. The charming silence inside the church gives a peaceful rest to the tense mind. It is said that kneeling before God and shedding tears can convert a heavily loaded mind into a floating paper. Visit the church for the divine ambience it offers.
