The smallest of all rock cave shrines in Southern India, Vizhinjam Rock Cave Temple, is situated at a distance of 17 km from the city. It is one of the famous tourist attractions in Trivandrum, established in the 8th century. Vizhinjam is the hamlet nearby Kovalam Beach. The shrine is a single-celled rock cave that houses the deity Vinandhara Dakshinamurti.
The front-outer walls of the rock cave have the images of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Inside the shrine on each side, there are unfinished sculptures of Shiva and Parvathi. In the unfinished sculpture of Shiva, he is seen dancing with a bow in his hand.
Since 1965, this rock cave has been under the protection of the Archeological Survey of India. Even though the cave temple was unnoticed from the 8th century till 1965, it didn’t lose its magnificence and value. Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium and the Fishing Harbour are two of the nearby attractions in the proximity of Vizhinjam Rock Cave temple.
