Valliyoorkavu Bhagavathy Temple

Valliyoorkavu Bhagavathy temple, dating back to its origins in the 14th century, is a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga in her three forms- Vana Durga, Bhadrakali, and Jala Durga. The temple has an ancient Kerala Style of Architecture that attracts many to its vicinity. Valliyoorkavu festival, spanning an average of 14 days, is the annual festival of the temple celebrated in March. The festival marks its beginning by bringing the sword of Valliyooramma from the adjacent temple, Palliyara Bhagavathy Temple by the chief priest accompanied by some devotees. 

The festival has overwhelming participation from the tribal communities as the flag hoisting on the 7th day is done by the tribal chief and all the 14 days of the festival are delighted by the tribal dance performances and tribal art form, Kalamezhuthu on every night of the festival. On the last day of the festival, tribals dance to the rhythm and beats of percussion instruments. Valliyoorkavu Bhagavathy Temple situated on the outskirts of Wayanad district is a must-visit pilgrim centre for the heritage and history it weighs along with the tribal customs and practices.
