Mattupetty dam, residing in the greenish valleys of Munnar at a distance of 13 km from the town is a wonderful place to visit in the Idukki district. Mattupetty Dam is situated right next to Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India. Mattupetty hills are about 1700 meters high and are filled with green tea plantations and wide-spreading grasslands. The reflection of these grasslands and plantations in the dam is yet another sight for the viewers.
Mattupetty Dam was constructed as part of the Pallivasal hydroelectric project undertaken by the Kerala State Government in the late 1940s. Thus, the dam and the nearby lake play a major role in electricity generation and water conservation. Mattupetty Hills and the nearby Shola forests have enough and more wildlife within them. Many of the elephants, birds, and other animals come near Mattupetty Dam to drink water. The visitors often get lucky in seeing these wild animals quenching their thirst in the serene clean water of the dam and the lake.
It is a perfect spot for people who wish to spend a calm and peaceful time with nature. There are yet many fun activities for adventure seekers. Trekking, jungle walk and boating facilities are readily available. Boating opportunities are controlled by The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) with an array of varied boatings on speed boats, motorboats, pedal boats, rowboats etc.
This extremely beautiful dam with its surrounding green valleys, plantations, forests, and hills deserves a visit by nature-loving adventurers. Family and friends are sure to enjoy this visit within the rolling hills of Munnar.
