Ashtamudi Lake, popularly known as the “gateway of backwaters”, is the second-largest lake in Kerala. Ashtamudi lake runs over a distance of 16 kilometers, covering almost 30% of Kollam district. “Ashta” means “eight” and “mudi” means “branch”, denoting that Ashtamudi Lake is a blend of eight branches of lakes. All these branches come together to form Ashtamudi Lake which joins the Arabian Sea. Kallada River is the major source of Ashtamudi Lake.
Thevally Lake, Kandachira Lake, Kureepuzha Lake, Thekkumbhagam Lake, Kallada Lake, Perumon Lake, Kumbalath Lake, and Kanjirottu Lake are the eight branches of Ashtamudi Lake known by different individual names. Coconut and palm trees line up the banks of the lake increasing the beauty and splendour of the backwaters.
