Kuttanad

Kuttanad

Kuttanad, widely known as the rice bowl of Kerala, owing to its large paddy fields lie majorly in the district of Alappuzha and partially in Kottayam. The village is one of the best tourist attractions in all of Kerala which gives a slice of our traditional Kerala lifestyle and culture. Acres and acres of paddy fields separated by dykes and canals are a wonder to our eyes. These canals come together to form lakes and rivers. The major river sources to these rice cultivations are Pampa, Meenachil, Achankovil, and Manimala.

It is beautiful to see women carrying sickles to the fields where men are sowing the seeds and removing the weeds from the good fields. Another peculiarity is that the paddy fields lie 2 meters below sea level, making it the lowest plane in the whole country. Apart from the rice cultivations, Kuttanad is famous for its backwaters. A houseboat trip through the backwaters is such a relaxing experience watching the coconut trees lining the banks, parrots and other birds flying over the paddy fields, working women and men in traditional Kerala style, etc.

The view of the countryside is such a spectacular sight filled with ducks swimming in the backwaters, youngsters diving into lakes to collect shells, elders swaying nets to catch fish, etc. Kuttanad also provides different tasty Kerala food items with coconut gratings and coconut oil, you can also enjoy the special beverage drink of the area, “toddy”. Locals, as well as tourists, come over to have a bottle of toddy and experience the taste of Kuttanadan cuisine.
