Jatayu Earth’s Centre is one of the latest tourist attractions in Kerala, established in the year of 2017. It is a rock-themed park with astonishing views. The main attraction of the spot is a giant rock-cut stone sculpture of the bird – Jatayu, the mythical bird from the Indian Epic Ramayana. This Jatayu bird sculpture is the world’s largest bird sculpture to date. Jatayu Earth’s Centre spans over an area of 65 acres over four hills.
The idea and design of this nature park along with the bird sculpture is that of a Malayali director, Rajiv Anchal who collaborated with the Kerala government to facilitate the project. Thus, it can be said that it is the very first project, born out of a public-private partnership under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model. The concept behind this project is the perfect blending of art, epic, history and technology.
Jatayu Earth Centre was built to promote mythology and adventure tourism in a way that it hosts many attractions including the bird sculpture, 6D theatre, museum-digital audio-visual room, cable car and Ayurvedic cave resort. The adventurous activities in the park include paintball, laser tag, archery, bouldering, rock climbing, air rifle shooting, log walk, commando nets, Burma bridges etc.
The myth behind Jatayu sculpture is that, during the abduction of Sita Devi, the demi-god Jatayu fought with Ravana to rescue Sita from his villainous clutches. But Ravana defeated the bird and it fell on the rock with its wings cut off. It is believed that Jatayu bird sculpture is built on the exact place where the bird fell. Inside the sculpture, there is a museum of two floors that depicts Treta Yuga, the period in which Ramayana takes place. And the third floor has multidimensional paintings of the same mythology. The 6D theatre is built within the wings of the large bird that showcases the audio-visual screening of the fight between Ravana and Jatayu bird.
