Munroe Island, the majestic island, situated at a distance of 27 km from Kollam is a combination of 8 small, tiny islands separated through small canals or lakes. The island is also known as “Munroturuth”. It is named after Colonel John Munroe, a British resident of Travancore Princely state. It is surrounded by the beautiful Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake, including other small backwaters. It was Colonel Munroe who initiated the integration of the different backwaters by digging canals with stone-age tools and megaliths.
Local, national, and international tourists arrive at Munroe Island to relish the charm of the backwaters, and the green, tall coconut trees on the banks of the backwaters. Even though coconut trees are a common view in Kerala, there is something special about the exciting vibe spread through the island.
Munroe island is particularly renowned for its Vallam Kali or boat race that takes place in the Kallada river during the Onam festival. This boat race attracts thousands of tourists to the enthralling island. Munroe Island facilitates a golden opportunity for tourists with a country craft cruise through the island. The cruise is available twice a day and the visitors can envision typical backwater island villages belonging to the 8 tiny islands of Munroe Island. There are also chances of going for canoe tours along the backwaters.
There are authentic restaurants on the island, which offer local cuisines made of refined coconut oil. Visit Munroe island for the tremendous greenery, relaxing backwaters, tasty local dishes, and rejuvenating feel it offers.
