Thangassery Lighthouse, the second tallest lighthouse in Kerala, is one of the major tourist attractions in Kollam district. The lighthouse is peculiar with its red and white oblique bands painted in a spiral pattern. It is one of the two lighthouses in the Kollam Metropolitan area, and it is under the strict surveillance of the Chennai Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightship. The lighthouse was built at an average height of 45 meters or 144 feet, in the year 1902.
The lighthouse was built as a guide for the merchant ships that approached the port for trading activities. Before the lighthouse, the British East India Company had a tower with an oil lamp for guiding the sailors. There are 195 spiraling steps inside the lighthouse to reach the top. Although a lift was constructed in 2016 for the ease of the visitors and to avoid climbing the stairs, visitors still prefer climbing the steps all the way to the top.
On top of the lighthouse, the visitors get a magnificent view of the blue sea, golden seashore, green palm trees, and ruins of old forts and churches built by the Dutch and Portuguese. Tangasseri lighthouse situated on the shores of Kollam Beach is visible for about 13 miles from the sea. Visit the lighthouse for the gorgeous view it offers from the top and along the seashore.
