If you are fascinated about ghost stories here is a famous one closely associated with a tourist attraction in Wayanad district. Chain tree is a Ficus tree that stands on the extreme end of the Western Ghats road. There are predominantly two legends associated with the tree. The first one would be that of a foreign engineer with the help of a tribal guide, Karinthandan, were exploring the outskirts and mountains of Western Ghats and they discovered many new routes. But later the foreign engineer killed the local guide to take credit for discovering the terrain all for himself. The spirit of the dead man has caused many accidents in the hairpin curves of the roadway.
The second myth says that a group of Adivasi Mahouts had guided some British people to this area and for the fear of these Adivasis going down at the foothills and guiding the Portuguese up to the height, they killed the Adivasi Mahouts. This, in turn, made their spirits to wander around the area haunting and causing accidents. At last, a local priest blessed the whole place and chained the spirits onto this Ficus tree. The chain is still visible on the tree and numerous visitors throng to see the chain hanging around the huge tree. Even if you don’t believe in any of these ghost stories, you can still visit this wonderful place for the astonishing terrains and the vicarious views of the downhill valleys.
