Vasco da Gama square is a narrow esplanade along the road to Fort Kochi beach. It is a perfect spot with magnificent views. Vasco da Gama square, with its synagogues, temples and churches serving alongside in perfect harmony, has a beautiful history of commercial trades and traders coming from different parts of the world. The buildings remain as a souvenir of the European culture left behind by the traders.
Vasco da Gama square gives the best sight of Chinese fishing nets lined one by one. These fishing nets were introduced to our lands by a Chinese trader and people in Kochi thought it to be better than our traditional nets. Since then, Chinese fishing nets have been a part of our fishing community and it is locally known as “Cheena Vala”. From Vasco da Gama square, one can get a proper view of Chinese fishing nets attached to teak or bamboo poles.
The square also has several stalls that sell seafood, tender coconuts, nuts, ice creams etc. An evening walk along this square can be so relaxing and comfortable, as it is a place that gives an accurate break from the buzzing city life.
