Bay Island Driftwood Museum situated in Kumarakom village of Kottayam district is one of the varied museums visited by many art enthusiasts. This driftwood museum displays a lot of sculptures made of tree remains. The museum was built and maintained by a retired school teacher Mrs Raji Punnoose. During her professional career as a teacher in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, she collected twisted tree trunks, stumps, roots, etc. brought by the sea onto the shores. Some of these would definitely be centuries or years old buried within the depth of the ocean.
The Bay of Bengal was always prone to cyclones and brought these ancient tree remains into the shores. This dynamic lady teacher had collected them and made nature sculptures out of it. Birds, animals, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes are some of the driftwood sculptures created by this artistic person. All the wood collections were shaped, carved, polished,d and preserved with enough care and dedication. It is indeed an amazing museum to visit on your trip to Kumarakom. The teacher was really able to put her stamp on nature with her artistic talents. Because of these interesting collections and preservation, the museum is listed among other museums in the Limca Books of Records. The red-brick building is sure to take your mind away into the world of arts and sculptures.
