If you are a musician or a music enthusiast, Sunny’s Gramophone Museum known as “Discs & Machines” must surely be on your list of places in Kottayam district. It is a private venture established on 25th January 2015 by Mr Sunny Mathew, a retired government officer of Kerala Forest Department. The museum has a tremendous collection of over 1,10,000 rare recordings, 260 gramophones, phonographs, valve records, tape recorders, early telephones, sewing machines etc. The museum is a doorway to the 20th-century musical world.
This two-story building is filled with metal racks to keep these antiques and recordings. It is definitely a paradise for music lovers and allows the younger generation to see and study the evolution of modern music. The museum has a rare gramophone collection of almost three decades dating from the 1900s to 1940s, the earliest record is from 1897. All the ancient gramophones and other musical instruments work perfectly and Mr Sunny Mathew personally cares for each of their maintenance. Upon your visit, you may also ask him to play any of the instruments, he will entertain you with music as well as the description and history related to the musical instrument.
