Poonjar Palace

Poonjar Palace located in Pala – Erattupetta route in Kottayam district stays as a shred of authentic evidence to our inglorious past and culture went by. This is a famous heritage site with a wide collection of antiques, wooden carvings, old-style furniture, etc. If not for the antiques, tourists will visit the palace for the astonishing architecture in traditional Kerala style. The palace was the residential home for the royal family of Poonjar, who had connections with the Travancore kingdom. Now the palace remains as a museum that is open for public viewing.

Poonjar palace has different antique collections such as a palanquin, exotic furniture, huge chandeliers, jewel boxes, a droni (treatment bed) for Ayurvedic massages made of a single wooden piece, rock-cut lamps, weapons, statues, sculptures of Nataraja (the dancing Shiva) etc. There is a special conch in the palace that is taken out once in a year for ritualistic practices and customs.

Near Poonjar Palace there is a temple that remotely resembles the Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The scriptures and paintings tell the story of our ancient Puranas. The rows of lamps (Chuttuvilakku) lit during the festivals draw numerous devotees to the temple. A visit to Poonjar Palace and the temple is a journey to our ancient past in different colourful phases.
