Pazhassiraja museum situated just 5 km away from Kozhikode city is one of the most visited centres in the district. The museum was initially built in 1812 as an East Hill Bungalow. It was later in 1976 the bungalow was transformed into a museum and in 1980 it was named after Pazhassiraja, the lion of Kerala.
Kerala Varma Pazhassiraja, belonging to the Padinjare Kovilakam of Kottayam Royal Family, was the one who led the Pazhassi Revolts against the British in the 1750s. The museum is under the control of the State Archaeological Department, with numerous exhibits from 1000 BC to 200 A.D including artefacts from the megalithic age and Indus Valley Civilisation. The long list of collections includes ancient coins, traditional bronze sculptures & utensils, umbrella stones, miniature models of temples, mural paintings, stone carvings, artefacts, antique bronzes, diamond cysts, etc.
