Palakkad Fort

Palakkad Fort, most commonly known as Tipu’s Fort, stands ingloriously in the heart of Palakkad city easily accessible via road. The Fort was built by the powerful ruler of the Mysore Kingdom, Hyder Ali in 1766 A.D. It was one of the most significant centers from where most of the military services and invasions were planned within Kerala borders. From the Mysore rulers, the British took control of the fort and at present, it is a preserved monument of the Archeological Department of the State Government.

There is a spacious ground within the fort premises, popularly known as “Kotta Maidan” or Fort Grounds. It initially existed as a staple for the horses and elephants used by the military of Tipu Sultan. Now the ground is used for conducting cricket matches, exhibitions, public gatherings, circuses etc. This majestic fortress in Palakkad has a very peculiar structure and architecture. The whole fort is square-shaped supported by granite walls and bastions which are square-shaped as well.

In earlier construction, the entrance to the fort was via a drawbridge, which was replaced by a strong and permanent one in recent years. The fort has many sightseeing places within the fort. There is a Hanuman Temple, at the entrance of the fort known as “Kotta Ambalam”, a Martyr’s Column, an open-air auditorium called “Rappadi”, the bird that sings at night, the Vatika Silavatika, the beautiful garden and surrounding greenery, and the sub-jail of Palakkad district.

A perfect amalgamation of ancient architecture, surrounding greenery and numerous sightseeing places, Palakkad fort offers the most exciting experience ever. The Fort was named after the son of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, thus the Fort also came to be known as Tipu’s Fort. If you are in Palakkad, never miss out the beguiling vision of this majestic fort.
