In the late 1960s, an artist Kanayi Kunhiraman sculpted a bold statue about 30 feet tall in Malampuzha gardens, Palakkad district. This 50-year-old statue of a naked woman sitting with her hair unlocked, legs stretched forward, and eyes half open, has become one of the most famous statues in the district and the state. The artist has faced a lot of criticism upon building such a statue and displaying it in a public space, which was considered “obscene”.
He replied to all the criticisms with a powerful statement- this is art, art must not be restricted to the four walls of museums. Most importantly women as these are fine to be worshipped in temples, so why not out in nature?- The statue was built with bronze for long-lasting life. The statue was a real backlash upon many conservative people in Kerala, yet many appreciated the rare craftsmanship and creativity of the artist. This award-winning artist succeeded in making some changes in the mindset of people. Soon the sculpture was accepted by society and became a part of the State’s landmarks. One can see the Yakshi statue, on a visit to Malampuzha gardens. Explore and appreciate this rare piece of art along with the artist who had the nerve for creativity and bold expressions.
