A sumptuous rock embedded within green hills, Illikkal Kallu, situated on top of Illikkal Mala is a major tourist attraction near Erattupetta in Kottayam District. It is located at a height of 6000 feet above sea level as one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats. The major peculiarity of the destination is that half the portion of the rock or stone has fallen off and the remaining half stands exalted. The beauty of the place is enhanced with numerous small streams and waterfalls stooping down into the formation of the Meenachil River.
Locals, as well as tourists around the country, come to visit this magnificent view. In order to reach the highest peak, travellers have to trek for about 3 km as vehicles are not allowed to the top. On the trekking trail, you could enjoy the view of three different hills that form the surrounding hill ranges. All three hills are in distant shapes with an altitude of 3400 ft above sea level. The first hill is in the shape of a mushroom, known as Kuda Kallu, is quite famous for the Nela Koduveli medicinal herb believed to be found here. This herb is said to have superpowers for accumulating wealth and rich harvest by the possessor.
The second hill looks like it got a small hunch on the sides, thus it is called Koonu Kallu. This hilltop offers a view of the Arabian Sea as a thin blue line on the horizon. The sunset view on the hilltops is precisely commendable. The hills are connected by two bridges named “Naragapalam” (bridge to hell) and “Swargavathil” (door to heaven). Kerala tourism department has proposed a plan to connect Illikkal Kallu to Ilaveezhapoonchira via a ropeway. Illikkal Kallu gives special views in different seasons, the best time to visit is summer.
