Willingdon Island is one of the largest man-made islands ever existing in all India. The island is named after the British Viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon. He was the Governor of the Madras Presidency at the time he granted permission to build the island in 1936. It was Sir. Robert Bristow, a harbour engineer, was behind this construction of the island that was completed within three years in 1939.
