Mappila Bay, also known as Mopila Bay, is a natural harbour residing on the Malabar Coast of Kannur district. Mappila Bay was once a major port that facilitated commercial trading between other ports including Lakshadweep and European countries. Mappila Bay offers a glorious vision of two historically significant buildings on either side that shouts out our heritage and European influence.
St. Angelo Fort built by the Portuguese people on the land of Kolathiris later became a significant military base which was seized by the Dutch and British respectively.
The other heritage building is the Arakkal Palace and Museum, which was the residence of the Muslim royal family in Kerala, Ali Rajas. The whole complex is still under the maintenance of the family trust with a museum set by the State Government for public visit. As the earlier times, Mappila Bay lost its prominence as a commercial hub, nowadays it is more like a fishing harbour with glorious views of the surrounding regions. There are boating facilities available, yet it is limited to the harbour, not into the coastal waters for unpredictable weather conditions. A visit to Mappila Bay would be exciting at its very core.
