Located at a distance of 5 km from Kollam, Thangassery village, was one of the favourite locations were the British, Portuguese and the Dutch people preferred to settle. The British often referred to Thangassery village as “Dutch Quilon”, whereas the locals referred to it as “the gold village”. Thangassery village is historically significant, as it has a series of forts and churches which were built by the Portuguese and Dutch. These heritage centres provide the best glance into an ancient era of their rule in India following the commercial trade on the Thangassery beach ports. 

Thangassery Beach is an important tourist attraction of the village. The seashore stretching for about 3 km with its silver-coloured sand is an enormous sight to be experienced. We can also see the legendary lighthouse rising above the green palm trees at a height of 144 ft from the ground. The lighthouse was established in 1902 and it is visible from the distance of 13 miles in the sea. 

The lighthouse served as the guide for the Portuguese and Dutch sailors and fishermen. The lighthouse can be visited from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. During the visiting hours, the tourists can climb on top of the lighthouse to get a gorgeous view of the blue sea stretching beyond the horizon, silver seashores and lush green palm trees from the top. This delightful vision must never be missed if you are in the vicinity of Kollam. A Carefree stroll through the Lighthouse road listening to the humming of the water waves and the rise and set of the sun must be enjoyed in its fullest.
