Shangumugham Beach

Shangumugham beach offers an ideal picnic spot with a peaceful and serene atmosphere along the mild breezy shorelines. Shangumugham beach is famous for the 35 m sculpture of matsya kanyaka or mermaid created by the award-winning sculptor, Kanayi Kunhiraman. The enormous matsya kanyaka leisurely lays on the beach shore with her long-loosen hair dangling in the wind, completely carved out of white stone.

Fishermen, vendors and tourists favour the charming beauty of the beach shore on usual days.  Shangumugham beach tends to get overcrowded at times during Arattu festival and Vinayaka Chaturthi. During arattu festival, thousands of devotees gather around the beachline as processions carrying the deities of Lord Padmanabhaswamy, Lord Narasimha and Lord Krishna. During Vinayaka Chathurthi, the idol of Lord Ganesha is carried into the seashore to be immersed in the ocean water, which is said as “visarjan” of Ganesha Chaturthi. The celebrations on these ethnic days intensify the cultural significance of the Shangumugham beach.

With the impeccable piece of art by Kanayi Kunhiraman, specially-built eating joints for the visitors and a stone-built mandapam in the central core make Shangumugham beach an everlasting beach memory in the minds of the visitors.
